Additional information:
The Norwegian Emigration Center was established in 1986 to promote increased contact between Norwegians and friends of Norway around the world. The Center is part of an international network of research and genealogy centers and can therefore offer a range of activities to all people of Norwegian descent interested in emigration history and genealogy.

The Norwegian Emigration Center offers in 2004 educational programs to pupils in primary schools. These activities and programs will be tailored to meet the needs of the curriculum and the age group of the pupils. The Center offers information, guidance and advice to teachers in all types of schools and colleges to ensure the best possible use of the center`s resources to satisfy their specific needs. Teachers are encouraged to make preliminary visits to the Center to discuss forthcoming programs and to plan follow-up activities with the staff. For more information, please contact Per Inge Bøe.

In the general teacher training course at the Stavanger University College, a module on Norwegian emigration to the USA was introduced in the fall of 1999. Students have elaborated on this module in their field work at the Norwegian Emigration Center.

Comenius project: Migration and intercultural relations
In February 2004 nine students from the Stavanger University College will have their field-work at the Norwegian Emigration Center. The students will be divided into three seperate groups to work with projects related to the field of migration and intercultural relations for two weeks.

Project 1. Early emigration versus today’s immigration
The first project concentrates on the comparison of the Norwegian migrant experience to North America and today’s experience of people entering Norway. In collaboration with “International House” we will take examples from the Norwegian emigration in the nineteenth century and use this experience to better understand the present migrants to our country. One task connected to this project is to develop activities for the AEMI European Migration Heritage Week (EMHW) that will take part in Stavanger in October 2004. The main target is to compose an activity –plan to AEMI’s EMHW to be used by other European countries.
Expected results:
Increased awareness of our migration heritage.
Citizens who are better informed about the challenge presented to Norway by current immigration.
Increased participation in events that promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation of our migration heritage.

Project 2. Teaching plan for the use of Internet sources
The second group will work out a teaching plan for how to use and find migrants and migrant-histories in the Norwegian sources on the Internet. The target group are teachers in elementary and secondary schools. The main sources in this project will be the Digital Archive and the exhibitions at the Norwegian National Library and the Norwegian Emigration Center. Another task in this project is to make a database with links to other Web sites that contain information on migration subjects. The teaching plan will be made available on our homepage.
Expected results:
Make it easier for teachers to find information on the theme of migration on the Internet.
Making creative and innovative use of information technology.

Project 3. Present pictures, letters and diaries on the Internet
The Emigration Center has build up a comprehensive archive of old pictures, letters, postcards and diaries from people who left their mother country. These sources will be scanned and thematically arranged before presented on the Internet for public use.  The students will take part in this process and also make various exercises for the pupils based on these letters and diaries. The students will also receive a copy of “Anton’s America – letters" (80 pages) and be encouraged to make a collection of exercises for pupils in secondary schools.
Expected results:
Increase knowledge and understanding of the Norwegian emigration by using pictures, diaries and letters and present the result on Internet.
Make an article of how to use sources like pictures, letters and diaries for educational purposes.
