The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies has its more than thirty years long history. Namely, the Department for Migration and Nationalites was founded in 1965 and the Centre for Migration Studies in 1967. These two institutions were integrated in 1984 under the name The Centre for Migration and Ethnic Studies, later The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies. For several years Institute was a part of the University of Zagreb. According to the last Scientific and Research Activities Law of the Republic of Croatia (1996) the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies was established as a public institute (as the other 22 research organisations in the Republic of Croatia) in order to carry out the programme of scientific research as public service under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Republic of Croatia. The Institute's research activities include basic, theoretical, empirical and applied researches. Its priorities of scientific research are concerned with external-continental and overseas migration (diaspora), internal migration, minorities in Croatia and Croatian minorities in the European countries and research on ethnicity and ethnic/nationality relations and processes in Croatia/Europe and in the world. The Institute's activities also include educational programme for young researches, participation in international researches projects, organisation of scientific conferences and workshops on migration and various aspects of ethnicity and ethnic issues. At present there are 17 on permanent basis employed researches (two new are joining by the end of 2000). Besides, six (6) new young researchers have recently joined the Institute on a four contract in order to obtain their MA's or PhD's in some of the fields of migraton and ethnic studies. The majority of the Institute's researches are sociologists, but there are also historians, political scientists, social goegraphers, economists and others. The Institute's library provides for acquisition, processing and storage of materials in Craoatian and other languages basically from social and human disciplines (sociology, anthropology, history, demography, social geography, psychology, political sciences, economy, linguistics ect.) as well as from interdisciplinary fields covering wide range of migration, minority and ethnicity. It also had a higly valuable archive material has recently been handed over to the State archive, but should be returned or last made easily accessible for use. The quartely journal Migration Themes (since 1985) primalrly published scientific articles in a wide range of fields relating t migration, ethnicity and identity problems in social sciences and humanities as well as in interdisciplinary frameworks. Papers are published in Croatian, Eglish, French and Russian but also in other languages. The journal is indexed in:Sociological Abstract, Inc. (San Diego, USA), REMISIS-Revue Bibliographique sur les Migrations Internationales (Paris, France)and Bibliography of Social Sciences(London, UK).
