Given the diversity of cultures that currently exist in Catalonia, there is the tendency to consider this fact as a source of the problems. Indeed, although the majority of people declare that they are not racist, it is seen that prejudices against people from other cultures are not only apparent, but in fact strongly reasserted.
The project "Let's live diversity" tries to iniciate some thoughts about interculturality and, at the same time, introduces youngsters directly to some of the cultures with which they live.
This project bases itself on experiences encountered by people from different cultures who live in Catalonia, retold in various workshop meetings. The program covers prior work done in the classroom that is important as a means of conceptual preparation about preconceived ideas and prejudices assumed by the pupils. On the other hand, the subsequent work has the objective of developing more profoundly the knowledge of the "others" in an empathetic and supportive way.
This project also provides a range of extense activities in order to bring four cultures closer together: that of the Maghreb, Black Africa, Central and South America and that of gypsy culture. They are structured in a way in which permits each subsection to be independent from the rest so that they can be used separately. In this way, the teacher can choose what it considers to be of most interest or what adapts best to its pedagogical needs.
The book comprises of five sections and in each one of those a part designed for the teacher can be found which summarizes the objectives of the subsequent sections. It also offers practical suggestions in order to work through the activities or it gives solutions to some of the previously thought of questions, always taking into account that the teacher is the most suitable person in knowing how to use the materials with its group in the classroom.
Following on from this there is a part of the book designated solely to the youngsters. In general, it consists of texts from different classes, presented graphically or with the proposal of audible material and specific activities.
If these materials are able to bring the uneasiness towards the cultures that coexist with ourselves to a head, if they incite students to reflect upon common stereotypes and preconceived prejudices, we will have taken a small step on the road towards diversity as a promising source of enrichment. |
