Workplan
The research planned in the frame of the TSG/DR aims at an comparison of mainly two aspects:
1. it aims at a comparison of how pupils in different countries deal with the statements presented in the `attitude test´ as a beginning of the YAM learning programme; leading questions are: how do the pupils understand the given statements? How do they explain their meaning and thus come to their answer? What concepts on migration/migrants can be figured out of their explanation/discussion? And where are the differences between the countries?
2. it aims at a comparison of which statements lead to the most heated discussions; leading questions are: on which statements do the pupils agree very easily? And on which do they have a deeper discussion? How do they manage to come to a conclusion within the frame of the given statements? = What risk is there, that pupils who head for the `right´ answer, change their point of view just because of `group preassure´? And where are the differences between the countries?
Methods:
It is planned, that basically all classes from the different countries are taken into consideration, in which the `attitude test´ is done as a group work of the hole class. In order to get the best results, the teachers are asked to make the pupils explain their understanding of the statement before trying to answer it. The pupils should also deeply explain their point of view and why they choose a certain answer. On the whole, it is the task of the teacher to initiate a discussion on each statement and give each person the possibility to express himself. Talking orders within the class should be sensitively regarded but respected by the teacher to gain some information about how the pupils manage to come to a conclusion.
It is necessary to save these lessons with a good working video-camera and subtitel the dialogue in english, so we can use the data.
After this has been done, a copy of the lessons is sent to us, so we can work on it. The results which we should get out of it in the end, are quantitative data on the one hand (how many pupils said ... in this and in that country?!) and qualitative information about their concepts on the other hand ( in Germany 34% said .. at statement 5 and they explained it in this and that way. In Norway 30% chose the same answer, but explained it completely different). The basic method which will be used, is the `documentary method´ after Ralf Bohnsack.
Next steps:
- discussion of this plan within the group of responsible persons of YAM
- timetabel for teacher training on how to initiate a discussion to reach our aims and how to subtitel the lesson afterwards (optional)
- rough timetable, when the first videos can be expected
- closer look at the statements to figure out some hypothesis
- contact to Norway and Slovenia/ training on the used methods (?)
