PRESENTATION OF THE SOFIA PROJECT
The project has four goals:
To increase the number of immigrants in our upper secondary school applying for higher education, for example university.
To help immigrants to handle their study-situation.
To make the Swedish educational system comprehensible for immigrants.
To make immigrants participating in the democracy work at school.
The project is open to all students of the school but it aims especially at silent and”invisible” immigrant girls.and immigrant boys under the pressure of high expectations from their families.
Students accepted in the project sign a contract, making their own responsibilities clear and also what they are entitled to expect from their participation.
The participants are divided into one or more SOFIA-groups. The groups work independently of the ordinary classes and they meet every week at specific hours.
The activities depend on the individual needs of the participants and the demands of the group.
Examples of activities are: Help doing homework, supplementary examination, lectures, seminars on topics of immediate interest, discussions on progress and so on.
Study visits are made in an attempt to play down the step to university and they also provide information on a lot of questions: How does a student live? What is a study loan? What is a department? What are the demands on a student? Student associations? Future jobs?
The project is carried out in cooperation with the Institution of social work at the university of Göteborg.
